The Wine

The 2016 Ruby Grafted Roots Pinot noir is a blend of Ruby Vineyard and Timbale & Thyme Vineyards. Ruby Vineyard consists of three clones of 37- to 43-year-old own-rooted Pinot noir on Laurelwood soil on the east side of the Chehalem Mountains AVA. Timbale & Thyme, grown on marine sedimentary soil, is located on Hendricks Road in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, and is the site of the Hendricks family’s original homestead in 1847. The power and finesse of Ruby old vines matches well with the beautiful fruit from Yamhill-Carlton. This wine is an expression of our unique Oregon story where our roots both old and new come together. In 2012, realizing a lifelong dream, Steve Hendricks and Flora Habibi purchased the Beran Vineyard. The entirety of the vineyard is own-rooted on vinifera, and the average vine age at Ruby is 40 years, with the first block planted in 1973 with source material from the legendary Eyrie South Block. We have three clones of Pinot noir: Dijon 115, Pommard and Wädenswil. Beyond our estate fruit we have focused on establishing long-term relationships with premium and established growers and vineyards in the North Willamette Valley. The Estate has been farmed organically since 2013. While we are not certified at this time, we are fully committed to organic practices in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the winery. We believe that farming and making wine with intent, vigilance and good practices allow our wines to display the beauty and uniqueness of this vineyard, hillside, valley and state.

The Winery

Ruby is a family winery with deep Oregon roots. Co-owner Steve Hendricks is a fifth-generation Oregonian; children Geoff and Katie are the sixth generation. Co-owner Flora Habibi oversees the business. The vineyard was first planted in 1973, making it one of the oldest in the north Willamette Valley. The winemaking team is led by Eric Hamacher, who has spent 22 years crafting top-notch wines in Oregon. He and skilled assistant winemaker Andrew Kirkland create wines of elegance, nuance and flavor. The tasting room is warm and inviting, with beautiful views of Mt. Hood, the Chehalem ridge and the vineyard. Truly a gem!
