The Wine

The 2019 Hyland Estates and Stoller Family Estate collaborative Auction lot, “The Volcanic Duet,” is a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay from the winery’s respective estate vineyards atop red, volcanic, Jory soils. The grapes used to craft this unique wine are grown on 25(plus)-year-old vines. Hyland Vineyard is perched high in the foothills of the McMinnville AVA. Hyland’s cooler climate allows the grape clusters extra hang time to develop their acidity and complex flavors. In contrast, Stoller Vineyard’s southern-facing site in the Dundee Hills AVA experiences slightly warmer temperatures during the growing season, allowing the grapes to ripen a bit earlier. Chardonnay 108 clones were used exclusively from Hyland, while Stoller primarily used Clone 76 (with some 95 and 548 as well) from the older sections of the vineyard.

This wine was barrel-aged in 60% new French oak; it marries the strengths of both vineyards into an exceptional bottle of Willamette Valley Chardonnay. A wine that can be enjoyed now or for many years to come, the Volcanic Duet will pair well with whatever you have on the dinner table. Precise, pure, and bright, this Chardonnay was made in collaboration by two dynamite women in the Oregon wine industry, Anne Sery and Kate Payne-Brown.

Learn more about this lot during Preview Week (July 26–30), when Jessica Endsworth of Northwest Wine Co. will represent this lot on July 26 as a member of the Auction Steering Committee (and one half of our Auction Chair duo). Register here.

The Winery

Hyland Vineyard is one of Oregon’s most historic and storied vineyards. Planted in 1971, the vineyard now stretches more than 185 acres among the picturesque foothills of Oregon’s Coast Range. Untouched, unmoved and self-rooted, Hyland’s gnarly 50-year-old vines remain entrenched in the red, volcanic, Jory soil from their bird’s-eye view overlooking the McMinnville foothills.

Stoller Family Estate is a 400-acre parcel located on the southern slope of the Dundee Hills. Pioneering Oregonian and founder Bill Stoller purchased his family’s second-generation farm in 1993 with the vision of cultivating an enduring legacy for the land and Oregon wine industry. Over the last 28 years, he has patiently transformed the property into the largest contiguous vineyard in the Dundee Hills that has become synonymous with producing exceptional wines. Stoller Family Estate features the world’s first LEED Gold–certified winery, three guest homes and state-of-the-art tasting rooms with panoramic vineyard views.
