The Wine

As we began our assemblage of the vintage, one barrel stood out for the unique way in which it carried the wine. Nysa Pinots can be very complex, a dozen different stimuli igniting your senses. The barrel, a once-filled Taransaud of medium toast, was produced in Beaune after selection for extra-tight grain and three years of air drying. More so than other barrels in the cellar, this selection has been shaped and balanced by dense but notably fine-grained, suave tannins that focus and lengthen the wine for a most pleasurable experience.

Nestled in the Dundee Hills AVA, Nysa Vineyard is the youngest site in Lavinea’s portfolio of single-vineyard Pinot noirs. A high-elevation planting with southeastern exposure, the organically farmed vineyard sits on intense volcanic Jory soil with basalt bedrock 8 to 12 feet below the surface. A late-ripening block of 100% Pommard, planted in 2003, produces a very complex wine capturing the red fruit notes typical of Dundee along with wildflowers and exotic spice, completed by earthy tones with wonderful mineral textures and brisk acidity that carries a long vibrant finish.
