The Wine

Crafted from the top ten barrels of the 2018 vintage, Gravity Flows Pinot Noir is an assemblage of high-elevation Dijon 777 from our Dundee Hills property, Meyer Vineyard, and lower-elevation Wädenswil from our Yamhill–Carlton property, Stermer Vineyard. The Meyer Vineyard contributes red fruit and elegance while the Stermer Vineyard provides richness, spice and earth. Aged in French oak for 14 months, this wine was produced using rigorous fruit selection for quality and gentle handling by utilizing our three-story gravity-flow facility to capture the distinction of these amazing sites.

Lemelson’s technically sophisticated gravity-flow winery was completed in 1999. Designed by architect Laurence Ferar, the winery was engineered using environmentally sustainable building materials at numerous stages of the construction process. Using lumber from one of Oregon’s first certified lumber producers, Oregon White Oak trees harvested on our property and trees from a family-owned farm on Mount Hood, the resulting winery was a testament to Eric Lemelson’s background as an environmental lawyer and his commitment to green principles.

The winery features multiple levels to accommodate gentle gravity-flow processes, which help preserve the unique flavor profiles produced in the vineyards. A one-of-a-kind 14-foot-high mobile sorting platform sits on four massive steel legs and moves along the winery on a track that allows the platform to be selectively positioned over stainless-steel fermentation tanks, allowing for precise sorting of fruit. The winery uses gravity to move wine under very low pressure from level to level, rather than pumps that can compromise delicate aromas and complex flavors.

Knowing that Pinot noir is a highly “nuanced” variety, our gravity-flow winery and gentle processing methods, while often more expensive and labor-intensive, afford our winemakers the luxury of crafting Pinot noir that is concentrated, elegant and expressive of the site-specific characteristics of the vineyard and the vintage.

The Winery

Lemelson Vineyards began as a dream—a dream to create a winery that celebrates innovation in technology, sustainability through nature and tradition in winemaking. Eric Lemelson had two clear goals when he began visualizing his winery: to design a “no compromises” Pinot noir production facility focused exclusively on quality, and to further the longevity of the pristine state that he calls home using building practices that define his commitment to the environment. Lemelson Vineyards comprises seven organically farmed vineyards in the northern Willamette Valley across three AVAs: Dundee Hills, Yamhill-Carlton and Chehalem Mountains.
