The Wine

As with so many things in winemaking, this wine and its name came together naturally rather than by design. Though we wanted to do a project that both honored our monk neighbors and reflected the purity of the 2018 vintage, it was only during barrel tasting for blending that it became apparent that three barrels in particular, one each of 667 (early-pick fruit), 777 (early-pick fruit) and Pommard (late-pick fruit), were exemplars of the complexity and balance of this vintage. That all three barrels were neutral furthered the ability of the flavor and texture components to shine through uncomplicated by grippy tannins. And the name? “The Habit” also came to us readily as both a nod to the inspiration for this wine as well as the hope that MonksGate will become a “habit” of yours!

The Winery

Searching for a return to the land, in 1998 Ron and Linda Moore began the blood-sweat-and-tears project of transforming this neglected property into a 20-acre vineyard composed of five clones of Pinot noir and one of Riesling. During this time they became known to the Trappist Monks, who had long trod the property for meditation and whose footsteps continue to bless the vineyard. In 2015, daughter and now second-generation grower Rebecca began making her mark and now oversees all aspects of both the vineyard and wine brand to assure that each estate wine embodies place, passion and seasonality.
