The Wine

Many of us remember the spooky place in the neighborhood where all of the kids were too scared to go. But sometimes there are places that even adults are unnerved by, and for good reason. An isolated hillside on the southwest corner of the Eola-Amity Hills was the location of lurid events that echoed through the community over the last quarter-century. As time has passed, the legend of Murder Mountain has faded and this volcanic bench is now known for its epic vineyards.

The Sojeau Vineyard is perched at 650 feet on Murder Mountain, facing the Van Duzer Corridor. The wine from this infamous slope is bursting with notes of sweet red and black cherries and layered with spices showing savory sarsaparilla, raw cocoa and tobacco. The palate is concentrated with notes of bolete mushrooms, black plums, violets and roses and has delicate yet gripping tannins that lead to a vibrant and intensely mineral finish.

The 2018 Murder Mountain Pinot Noir is a thrilling combination of the graceful fruit of Eola-Amity and a thoughtful hand in the cellar. There is no doubt this wine will become its own legend over time.

The Winery

For wife-and-husband team of Erica Landon and Ken Pahlow, 2008 marked the launch of their dream: the formation of Walter Scott Wines. In the spring of that year the two partners emptied their meager retirement accounts and used the funds to get started. Their first vintage was produced at Patricia Green Cellars, followed by two vintages at Evening Land where they worked alongside Dominique Lafon and began making Chardonnay, which has contributed significantly to their production. Today, Walter Scott has found a home in the Eola-Amity Hills and has earned a position among the great producers of Pinot noir and Chardonnay.
